Grauberger family plot at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, est. 1777
Because the cemetery is abandoned, the graves remain unattended. Several of our family’s stones had snapped from their base and were laying on the ground, as a result. Our family does not have the funds to repair the stones; however, we wanted to raise them again. This entailed digging a hole next to the original stone’s base, which was still below ground. Half of the hole was filled with gravel for drainage, then the full headstone was inserted so it was pressed against the original base for support. Fill to ground level and poof! It’s a raised headstone, just a bit shorter than before.
Footnote: our family is descended from Daniel’s first wife, Gertrude Quakenbush. In “Witness to the Revolution,” the little girl was named in honor of my great grandmother
