My ancestors - the Coles - buried at St. John's Evangelical Cemetery, Melrose, N.Y. (est. 1777). The church building was dismantled and moved to Troy, N.Y. in the 1890s. The original cemetery lies neglected and in disrepair despite thirteen Revolutionary War veterans and a Civil War casualty being buried there.

Each of the headstones shown here had snapped off at surface level and were found hidden in the weeds, lying on the ground. Our family cleared the site, dug new holes which we filled in halfway with gravel, then we leaned the stones against their original base that was still below ground level before burying the stones again. Unfortunately, although the stones stand once again on their own, their inscriptions are buried until such time as funding can be obtained to properly restore the stones.

Daniel Cole (1793 - Mar. 06, 1858) married Elizabeth Grauberger (1794 - Feb. 12, 1880). Their daughter, Charlotte Lester (1827 - Oct. 16, 1875), is buried with them.
